Brief Biographical Sketch:
I am a third year ethnomusicology major at UCLA. I am a student of old time, Irish, American folk, and Middle Eastern music. When I'm not practicing my banjo, you can find me reading sci-fi or watching Netflix. Through slavery, immigration, and the Civil Rights Era, the banjo has played a crucial role in American history. But why is this hillbilly instrument so important? Where did it come from? This class will answer those questions! Using videos, recordings, and live examples, we will explore the banjo's roots and diaspora and listen to some cool music from all over the world.
