A279: Introduction to Korean Contemporary Art

This course will give a summarized overview of Korean Contemporary art, an area underrepresented and under-researched in art history. We will begin first in the Modern art period to give context, starting in the early 1900s during the Japanese occupation and delve deeply into the Contemporary period being around 1953, the end of the Korean war. Two major areas of focus will be Dansaekhwa art in the 1970s and Minjung art in the 1980s which continue to influence artists today. As well, we will discuss very recent artworks within the last 20 years, many of which explore themes of diaspora, connection to heritage, and experimentation with cultural identity. By the end of this course, students will have knowledge on a globally expanding field of art that is underrepresented in today’s education and as well will have learned practical art analysis skills to better understand art and design outside the classroom.

H273: BIZARRE REALITIES: Philosophical Views of the Universe

Why do things like ghosts seem so unscientific? What is the difference between religion and science; what sorts of "things" should they talk about? Why do some philosophers seem so crazy when they talk about the universe? In this lecture, we will be looking at some of the more bizarre philosophical descriptions of the universe throughout history. By simplifying Aristotle's description of "causality," we will discuss the reasons that these descriptions are so bizarre and how they compare to more scientific views of reality. Overall, this will give us an account of the academic relationship between religion, metaphysics, and science.

In this class, we'll look at neglected Indian films and songs that demonstrate that attraction and friendship as seen from the female gaze are not emotions that are incorrect, but rather a natural experience of being human.
It also serves to demonstrate a different view of female perspectives than is shown by mainstream American media: to show that there are different cultural outlooks on romance and attraction. A more diverse understanding of this subject will hopefully translate to a more diverse understanding of yourselves. The class also touches on queer identities in Indian film, and how that relates to the female gaze.
This class hopes to broaden your available information about the ways lives are led across the globe, and to make the college transition less daunting for all genders, ensuring everyone garners shared respect for people's feelings and choices in the process.

This course is designed to explore the themes of duality and Christian symbolism in Kendrick Lamar's fourth studio album, DAMN, through the lens of Jungian principles of analytical psychology. In this class, students will examine the album's lyrical content, musical style, and cultural context to better understand how Lamar uses duality and Christian symbolism to convey his message. Throughout the course, we will focus on several key concepts from analytical psychology, including the collective unconscious, archetypes, and the process of individuation. By applying these concepts to Lamar's work, we will deepen our understanding of the album's themes and their psychological significance.
The course is split into three sections: Overview, Symbolism, and Christification. The course begins with an overview of Jungian psychology. We will then move on to explore the duality theme in DAMN, paying special attention to Lamar's use of contrasting images and ideas.

Finn and Jake fill their days with wild adventures, hanging out with their friends, and even challenging the cosmic rules of their universe. They do a lot but they especially say a lot. Every single episode elicits laughs- but why? This course explores Adventure Time’s humor through a critical lens of sociolinguistics.

While everyone needs to eat to survive, food is something we form connections with and impacts our daily lives, we can always find significance in it emotionally and in context with the world. This class will look at the migration of people, culture and practices and how food is produced and consumed. By focusing on this, we gain the ability to connect with our plates in a thoughtful way and expose ourselves to elements of the world’s historical, social, economic and political relationships. This seminar aims to introduce these otherwise complicated concepts through familiar topics of food, creating connections to various subjects students. The topics we’ll go over here can be applied to various future college and high school courses.

The potential reunification of North and South Korea has long since puzzled socioeconomic, developmental, and political theorists worldwide. The long warring period, coupled with complex political orders and cultural differences, complicate the possibility of ever realizing a reunified Korea. However, several activist groups and political leaders have been pushing for reunification policies—demonstrating that a potential future political world that includes a reunified Korea is feasible. But what would that look like? How strict—or loose—is the term ‘reunification’? What can we expect to see in a world where the two Koreas are reunified? What are the pros and cons to a reunified Korea?
This class aims to provide a sense of what a college-level political science or economic development course may look like. No prior knowledge of political or economic theory is required—just a willingness to learn! Join me as we discuss the potentiality and feasibility of the reunification between North and South Korea!

With 26 million people living in South Korea's capital Seoul, it acts as not only the capital city but also the cultural, financial, and industrial center of South Korea. It is a vibrant city with so many offerings such cheap and delicious streets, beautiful (and mostly free!) museums and so many different festivals to enjoy year-round. And during the previous academic year, Seoul was my home.
As a financially independent, first-generation Latinx college student, I worked hard so I could spend a year abroad in South Korea’s capital city of Seoul. During my time abroad, I went on trips around the peninsula, I ate out for each of my meals everyday, I went to so many concerts (some for free!), and I simply just had a really great time studying abroad in Korea.
So are you interested in studying abroad during college? Maybe you want to go to South Korea too, or maybe another country like Chile, Japan, or Australia. Let’s talk about it!
